The Soul of an Entrepreneur
Augie Byllott is a husband and father who comes from humble beginnings. He’s oldest of 6 children who grew up in a working class home. “Considering the fact that dad worked and mom stayed home to raise the kids; how they kept a roof over our head and food in our bellies was an amazing accomplishment.” As a young man Augie loved two things, sports and music. He played the trumpet and later learned keyboards and percussion; but the trumpet was his first love. Inspired by performers like Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval and Harry James and bands like Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears, later in life he would play professionally. As for sports, he loved soccer, baseball and basketball. As an adult he would coach youth soccer for 10 seasons and eventually serve as president of the Hauppauge Youth Soccer Club on Long Island. “We had over 700 boys and girls in the program.”
Even as a young boy Augie had an entrepreneurial spirit, maybe it was because the family struggled financially and there was never a lot of extra money. Whether it was mowing lawns, shoveling snow, delivering newspapers or washing cars, he always found a way to earn extra money. He learned at a young age that you could accomplish a great deal when you focus your mind on a goal.
One of his greatest discoveries as a young man was learning to think outside the box. While delivering newspapers could earn you a weekly paycheck (small as it was), he could also sell newspaper subscriptions and earn significant bonuses; trips, sporting goods, cash and other goodies!
“Wow, you could work for a paycheck or you could sell; and selling was more fun and more profitable!” It allowed him to build relationships that would lead to other opportunities (remember washing cars, shoveling snow & mowing lawns). He was beginning to understand the lifetime value of a customer. “Selling allowed me to control my income because a job had limits; but with selling, the more I could sell the more I could earn.”
As a young entrepreneur, he found that being able to build rapport and find ways to make people’s lives better could create endless possibilities. ‘From about age 12 on I never had to ask for spending money. I’m sure that was good for my parents, but it was even better for me because I never felt like I had to do without. If I wanted something, I’d make it a goal, I’d earn the money and then buy it. When the ice cream truck came by I always had a decision to make, spend or save?”
After high school he attended Long Island University, C. W. Post campus to study Music Education and Economics. He continued to play music and in the 1979 entered the banking industry as an account executive (a nice sounding title for entry level newbie salesman who gets paid squat) where he worked his way up the corporate ladder to Vice President of National Sales.
It was during this time he met one of his many mentors who pointed him in the direction of real estate for building wealth. He told Augie that, “a job will pay your bills but investments will allow you to control your financial destiny.” The combination of career and investments allowed Augie to retire from corporate life at the age of 48 when he was able to follow another passion; ministry.
Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? The journey wasn’t with out a few detours. At age 31 there was a disruption to the seemingly perfect plan; divorce. Amicable though it was, for the benefit of his then young son, he left everything of value behind. “I basically had to start my life over financially.
I had $400, my clothes and a company car. That was my total net worth. I rented a room from an old high school buddy and lived a pretty Spartan life until I got back on my feet financially. It took a few years and then I bought my first house. The mortgage rate was 14% and it scared the __ __ __ __ out of me (you can fill in the blank).”
Then the entrepreneurial spirit took over and he converted it to a two family house and had his first income producing property. “ That rental income cut my mortgage payment in half.” Now he had someone helping to buy him that house.
A few years later he met and married his wife of over twenty years Audrey. As a single woman she too followed a similar pattern of buying a single-family house and converting it to an income producing residence. Together they have bought, renovated and sold many houses and had lots of fun doing it! By the time they met Audrey’s house was actually paying her $400 a month to live there because she not only had a tenant she had a girlfriend renting a room. “I guess we both knew that we couldn’t accomplish everything we wanted in life with just a paycheck.”
When they married they set a goal to retire from corporate life by age 50 in order to pursue their passions. Together they worked in corporate America and also invested in real estate. Augie left the corporate life at age 48 and became a deacon and served as part of the Pastoral Care team in a 350-bed nursing home as well as a Chaplain in a 300-bed hospital. He was certified as a Leader in Stephen Ministry and also a bereavement facilitator. Augie served in volunteer ministry full time for over three years. “The time I spent volunteering made me realize I wanted to help people. ”It was a very special time for me and I thought that would be how I’d spend the remainder of my life.” In 2003 they moved to Florida and things were about to change once again.
Augie found that there were new needs to be fulfilled and people to serve. “I thought I’d continue in Chaplaincy but the Lord led me on a different path.” There are many types of ministry, some with a collar and some without. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, “always preach the Gospel, use words when necessary.” Our actions frequently speak louder than our words.
Augie began working with struggling homeowners through his company Homeowner Resource and helped families avoid foreclosure and helped many others find affordable quality housing. In 2007 both Augie and Audrey earned the national PHP designation, Professional Housing Provider sponsored by the National Real Estate Investor Association. In addition to helping families they were able to volunteer in their community serving on boards, and raising money for charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Christian Children’s Fund and Children of the Nations.
As a full-time real estate investor, Augie has completed over 200 transactions in the last six years. He is a Lifetime Member of the Central Florida Realty Investors Association, (CFRI), as well as a member of Investor’s Resource Center in Orlando, Polk County REIA and an affiliate member of Osceola County Association of Realtors (OSCAR). The success he’s enjoyed in his business has led him to teach others and he is a nationally recognized author, trainer, coach and publisher.
